Shotokan Karate Ryu members complete quarterly kyu grading at Mountfitchet Romeera Leisure Centre in Stansted
More than 90 Shotokan Karate Ryu members took part in the club’s quarterly kyu (coloured belt) grading.
The karatekas were assessed by Sensei Michael Ring (seventh dan) and Sensei Donna Ring (fifth dan) at Mountfitchet Romeera Leisure Centre in Stansted.
They were tested on kihon (basics), kata (formal exercises) and kumite (sparring) as well as having to demonstrate they could meet the standards required in traditional shotokan karate-do.
The grading began with the youngest members in the Tiger Tots programme, now in its 21st successful year, which caters for children aged four to six.
The day progressed through each grade, culminating in the brown belts and then students preparing to attempt dan grades in October being put through their paces.
And there was a 100% pass rate, with almost two-thirds of the Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted-based club’s membership eligible to grade.
“The students and their parents should be extremely proud of what they achieved,” said Sensei Michael Ring.
“A 100% pass rate is rare and shows the fortitude of the students in defeating their nerves.”
