Bishop’s Stortford beat Cambridge University II 2-0 in East Women’s Hockey League
Bishop’s Stortford won 2-0 at Cambridge University II to register their first East Women’s Hockey League, Premier Division success of the season on Saturday (October 4).
Katherine Langridge and Fiona Mulder both scored from well-worked short corners while the home goalkeeper also produced several fine saves.
Anna Sydes hit a hat-trick as the second team also claimed their opening Division 1S victory of the campaign by beating Broxbourne II 4-1.
Nicky Bareham was also on target for the hosts while player-of-the-match Charlotte Pettit defended excellently.
The third team drew 2-2 at home to Stevenage in 2SW.
Jemima Tasker grabbed a deserved equaliser and the player-of-the-match accolade went to Clare Holmes.
Lois Wright claimed a brace when the fourth team drew 3-3 at Stevenage II in 3SW.
She was joined on the score sheet by Francesca Young - whose late penalty corner clinched the point - while goalkeeper Lianne Warnell’s key saves made her player of the match.
In the same division, the fifth team lost 3-2 at home to Broxbourne III.
Emily Wood and Christie Ansell found the net and Jo Sullivan took the player-of-the-match spoils.
Goals from Karen Leach and Lillie Egkobhan could not prevent a resilient sixth team losing 4-2 at Basildon in 3SE.
Jemima Osmond bagged a treble to steer the seventh team to a dominant 6-0 victory at Stevenage IV in 5SW.
Holly Haslam, Ava O’Neill and Megan Laws also notched while midfielder Annie earned the player-of-the-match award for her tireless effort.
The eighth team were awarded a walkover against Stevenage V in 6SW while, in the same division, Catherine Smith and Victoria Thompson scored and Kimberly Guthrie was named player of the match as the ninth team won 2-1 at Welwyn Garden City III.
In the East Men’s League, Premier Division, the first team were beaten 8-3 at home by a ruthless Broxbourne side.
Stortford, who were 8-0 down after an hour, produced a spirited finish as Jamie Brooks bagged a brace and Jon Taylor netted.
Sam Bampton hit a last-minute winner as the second team won 3-2 at their Broxbourne counterparts in 2SW.
Bruce Rodda and Matthew Turner were also on target for the visitors.
Goals from Luke Farner, Matthew Brown, Danut Stoian and Steve Beel earned the third team a 4-2 home win over Broxbourne III in 3SW.
The fourth team lost 2-1 to Shefford & Sandy II in 4SW and the sixth team were beaten 1-0 by Shefford & Sandy IV in 6SW.
