George Quantrell strike condemns Bishop’s Stortford to 2-1 home defeat against Leiston in Southern League Premier Central

Bishop’s Stortford conceded in the second minute of added time as they lost 2-1 at home to Leiston in the Pitching In Southern League, Premier Central on Saturday (December 21).

The Blues led with 13 minutes remaining thanks to Jack Roberts’ long-range strike, but Ben Fowkes equalised before George Quantrell won it for the mid-table visitors at the death.

A third defeat in a row leaves Steve Castle’s side 16th in the table, three places and one point above the relegation zone.

They travel to 12th-placed AFC Sudbury on Boxing Day (1pm) before back-to-back home games against eighth-placed Redditch United and seventh-placed Bedford Town on Saturday (December 28) and New Year’s Day respectively (both 3pm).

Former Blue Fraser Alexander had the away side’s effort, with his curling shot well saved by Elliot Krasniqi, before a goalbound header from the resulting corner was blocked on the line by Cole Dasilva.

Kyran Clements thought he had given Leiston the lead when he poked home the rebound after a shot had hit the woodwork, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Krasniqi produced saves to deny Rossi Jarvis and Ismael Fatadjo while Clements poked over from close range.

Stortford had a chance before half time when Presley Evans won the ball back in midfield and Brad Russell had a shot, but it went over the bar.

It was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Roberts pounced on a mistake and lobbed goalkeeper Ellis Craven from 30 yards.

They could have doubled their advantage when Russell crossed to Lanre Balogun, but the striker was denied by Craven’s superb reaction stop.

Russell then missed the target for the Blues before Fowkes levelled matters for the visitors with a 77th-minute first-time finish.

And Castle’s men finished empty-handed as Quantrell netted from close range to secure maximum points for the Suffolk side.
