Bishop's Stortford Golf Club appoint Leventhorpe School student and England development squad player George Wright as 2021 junior captain
George Wright has been appointed Bishop's Stortford Golf Club's new junior captain – and he wants to mark his year in charge with an international call-up.
The 17-year-old, who has been playing the game since the age of nine, takes over the reins from Jude Duggan.
Wright, who is studying for A levels in maths, economics and psychology at Leventhorpe School in Sawbridgeworth, is hoping to win a major national junior tournament in 2021 as well as get selected to represent England boys. He is already in the England boys' regional development squad.
The teenager, who has a handicap index of plus 1.5, has already enjoyed plenty of success in his burgeoning career.
He was one of three Stortford youngsters who combined to win the Hertfordshire Junior Team Championship and advanced to the national finals at Frilford Heath when he was just 12.
In 2019, at the age of 15, Wright made his debut for the Dunmow Road club's scratch team.
And that year proved to be a big one as he only missed out on winning the Midland Boys' Under-16 Championship in a play-off and was also runner-up in the Hertfordshire County Under-16 Championship.
Wright's predecessor Duggan saw his year as junior captain at Stortford decimated by the coronavirus restrictions, but he could always be found with a smile on his face and trying to help others in difficult circumstances.
