LEARN MOREThere were wild celebrations as Northgate did the double on home soil at the Kitteridge All Sports Bishop's Stortford Primary Schools' League finals day.
The pupils welcomed their rivals from Manor Fields and Windhill21 to the Cricketfield Lane school for the Gold and Silver League finals respectively last Wednesday (March 30).
And it was the teams in green who were feeling on top of the world after triumphing in both matches.
Manor Fields started the Gold League final brightly and forced Northgate goalkeeper Nathan into a couple of early saves.
The hosts took the lead midway through the first half when striker Toby went on a fine solo run, turned a defender and found the top corner with an unstoppable shot.
The same player netted again by slotting past the onrushing goalkeeper before Harry tapped in at the far post following a nice passing move down the right-hand side.
Manor Fields pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time when their player of the match Leo won and converted a free kick from outside the box.
Chances went begging for Manor Fields after the interval and Northgate sealed a 4-1 victory with a fantastic strike by substitute Jude from an acute angle.
Northgate dominated the majority of the Silver League final against Windhill21, but found it impossible to score past a truly inspired goalkeeper who produced countless saves.
Windhill had been hugely impressive in the league – winning eight of their nine games before their last one was postponed due to Covid – and their togetherness kept them in the final as they made some last-ditch tackles.
They could even have broken the deadlock on one of several second-half breakaways when a hard shot cannoned back off the inside of the post.
The game ended goalless and both sets of players showed bravery to step up and take penalties, with Northgate winning the shootout 4-3.
With the football season now coming to a close, attention will turn to the KAS Cricket League. Competing this summer are All Saints, Howe Green, Little Hallingbury, Manor Fields, Northgate, Richard Whittington, St Joseph's, Summercroft, Thorn Grove and Windhill21.
