Shotokan Karate Ryu holds quarterly coloured belt grading in Stansted

More than 100 martial artists assembled for Shotokan Karate Ryu’s quarterly kyu (coloured belt) grading.

The Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted-based club held the event at the latter’s Mountfitchet Romeera Leisure Centre.

And there was a 98% pass rate as the students were assessed on kihon (basics), kata (formal exercises) and kumite (sparring).

The grading began with the club’s youngest members in the Tiger Tots programme, now in its 21st successful year, which caters for children aged four to six.

Each grade had their turn, culminating in the brown belts showcasing their abilities in shiai kumite (free fighting).

“The dedication and spirit shown today exemplifies what SKR represents,” said Sensei Michael Ring, seventh dan, who conducted the grading alongside Sensei Donna Ring, fifth dan.

“As we celebrate our 22nd year, it is inspiring to see so many students continue to maintain the high standards we aspire to.”
