Bishop's Stortford crowned Hertfordshire Division One squash champions

By Michael Vaughton

Bishop’s Stortford have captured the Hertfordshire Division One title for the first time in seven years after coming through a winner-takes-all showdown against Broxbourne.

The team of Diego Gobbi, Nick Mulvey – who are ranked Nos 151 and 210 in the world respectively – Tim Dixon, Mike Aley and Mark McEwen triumphed 4-1.

Under the captaincy of Jake Byrne, fielding a mixture of youth and experience has paid dividends as they overcame a mid-season wobble to take the crown.

The Division Two team sit fourth with one match to play and can still achieve a top-two finish for the second season running. The two Essex League sides could be forced to play off to decide who earns promotion to the Premier Division. Stortford will also have two teams in the National Club Finals at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Mulvey and Dixon were part of the triumphant Herts team who won the prestigious Inter-County Tournament in Nottingham.
