Bishop’s Stortford Lawn Tennis Club teenagers Jamie Broughton and River Conway reach Play Your Way to Wimbledon national finals at SW19

Two talented Bishop’s Stortford Lawn Tennis Club teenagers teamed up to win the chance to play on the hallowed courts of SW19.

Jamie Broughton and River Conway, both 14, achieved success at a series of qualifying events to reach the Play Your Way to Wimbledon under-18 national finals.

The friends got things under way by triumphing at the local stage, with the doubles competition being held at their home club in Cricketfield Lane.

They won all three of their matches without dropping a single game.

Next up was the area finals - the under-18 grade four Buckinghamshire/Hertfordshire event - at Wooburn Park Lawn Tennis Club near High Wycombe.

Broughton and Conway were the youngest pair there, but they rose to the challenge and won all six of their matches.

They showed real character to taste victory in the semi-final and final, with both contests going to nail-biting third sets.

It meant they got to play at Wimbledon in the national finals, with them and 23 other doubles pairings battling it out on the famous club’s Aorangi Park courts.

The Stortford duo took part in a round robin group stage, winning one match comfortably 6-3, 6-3 before losing another competitive clash 6-7, 3-6.

They finished second in their pool and missed out on a place in the quarter-finals, but it was a hugely impressive performance considering they were the youngest pair by far in the whole event.

And the pair’s successful summer also included being crowned county under-14 doubles champions at Rickmansworth.

They also produced a tremendous effort in the county under-16 competition, reaching the semi-finals where they lost to the No 1 seeds and eventual champions in a very close match.
