Bishop's Stortford Swimming Club come second in third round of Arena League and hope to have clinched promotion to Division One




Bishop's Stortford Swimming Club hope they have done enough to secure promotion after finishing second in the Arena League.

The team were runners-up in the final gala when they went head to head with title rivals Enfield as well as Saxon Crown and Broomfield Park.

Every race was hard fought and many came down to fingertip finishes, but it was Enfield who won on the night with 212 gala points compared to Stortford's 187 and clinched first place overall in the division with a slender two-point margin.

Stortford swimmers battled valiantly in all of their races and had top-three finishes in 25 of the 34 individual events, including eight victories, as well as three first-, one second- and two third-place finishes in relays.

Jacob Hayes (100m backstroke), Kirsty Neill (100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke) were winners in the 15-under category.

Emma Fields (100m butterfly), Jago Derrington (100m backstroke), Lauren Gore (100m breaststroke), Niamh James (200m individual medley and 100m backstroke) got to the top of the podium in their 16-over events.

Club captains Freya Reilly and Jakey Hayes accepted the second-place pennant after the event and they are now awaiting confirmation of their promotion to Division One for next season.

The team received great support throughout the event from coaches Benoit Grattepanche and Joe Collins, team managers Sarah Neill and Kat Gore and officials Claire Fields and Steve Burgess.
