Ashley Sutton claims second victory of season at Donington Park to remain in British Touring Car Championship title contention
Ashley Sutton claimed his second victory of the season at Donington Park on Sunday (August 25) to remain firmly in Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship title contention.
The former Birchwood High School student came second in the opening race before making the top step of the podium in race two.
Sutton then got into trouble early on in the weekend’s final encounter to finish ‘not classified’ and remain 20 points adrift of top spot with two rounds remaining.
The Bishop’s Stortford racer, who competes for NAPA Racing UK, is third on 296 points while leader Jake Hill has 316 and second-placed Tom Ingram has 307.
Team BMW’s Colin Turkington claimed the honours in the opening race as he powered past Josh Cook and went on to take the chequered flag.
Runner-up Sutton applied some late pressure having also gone past Cook.
It was then Sutton’s turn to taste success as he held on to win the second race ahead of Turkington, Hill and Cook.
But Sutton, who is bidding to win a record-breaking fifth BTCC crown, suffered an early setback and was forced out of contention, with his Ford Focus ST completing 14 of the 17 laps.
The championship resumes at Silverstone on the weekend of September 21-22 before concluding on the weekend of October 5-6 at Brands Hatch.
