On-loan Ipswich Town goalkeeper Charlie Binns saves two penalties as Bishop’s Stortford beat Flackwell Heath in FA Trophy third qualifying round

Charlie Binns made two saves in the shootout as 10-man Bishop’s Stortford beat lower-level Flackwell Heath on penalties in the Isuzu FA Trophy on Saturday (October 5).

The young goalkeeper, who is on loan from Premier League side Ipswich Town, helped the visitors triumph 4-1 on spot kicks after the third qualifying round tie had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes in Buckinghamshire.

Rashawn Scott’s third goal in four games put the Blues ahead after 12 minutes, but their opponents, who compete one step below in Pitching In Southern League, Division One Central, equalised through substitute Eddie Lee a minute from time after Isa Rotimi had been sent off for the visitors just before the hour mark.

But it was Steve Castle’s team who progressed as they scored all of their penalties and Binns produced two stops.

The Blues will also take on a side from the level below in the next round after being drawn at home to Isthmian League, North Division side Felixstowe & Walton United. The first round tie is scheduled for Saturday October 26.

Jack Roberts twice went close for Stortford early on as he drew a save from Carl Dennison and was also denied by the bar from the edge of the box.

It did not take long for the Blues to go ahead as Scott cut in off the left wing and beat the goalkeeper at his near post with a right-footed effort.

The Heathens grew into the contest and Binns was forced into a fine double save before Jack Shakespeare shot wide.

Roberts and Fabio Virciglio had chances to extend the away side’s lead while, at the other end, Lewis Patrick saw a shot cannon off the woodwork.

The Blues were reduced to 10 men 14 minutes into the second half when Rotimi picked up two yellow cards in quick succession.

The hosts looked to make their numerical advantage tell as Shakespeare was twice denied by Binns and Lee fired over from close range.

Substitutes Brad Russell and Kian Harness both missed the target with efforts for Stortford.

And the Heathens levelled matters with just a minute of regular time to go when Lee found the net via the post after Callum Mapley had nodded the ball down into his path.

Cole Dasilva, Jaden Ogwuazor and Sami Moutawafiq all netted for the Blues in the shootout as Binns made two similar saves, low down to his right, to thwart Lee and Matthew Ayres.

Abdellah El Jalaoui did get the Heathens on the board, but Harness beat Dennison to complete the win for the visitors.
