Six Bishop's Stortford Swimming Club members excelled as they qualified for the Swim England National Winter Championships.

Kirsty Neill, Sami Zemzami, Millie Fields, Alex Catton, Niamh James and Callum Davis all achieved qualifying times with great performances at the Swim England East Region Short Course Championships in Luton.

The three-day competition saw the best swimmers from the region race in a 25m pool with one open age group for each event, meaning competitors as young as 12 going up against those aged 20-plus.

Many of the Stortford swimmers achieved personal bests across 61 races. It was James, 20, who stole the show as she won the 200m backstroke three seconds ahead of second place and took silver in the 100m backstroke as well as bronze in the 200m individual medley.

Neill came fourth in the 200m breaststroke and eighth in the 100m breaststroke while Zemzami was fifth in the 200m butterfly and 400m IM.

Fields took fifth in the 200m freestyle and Davis finished seventh and eighth in the 50m butterfly and 100m fly respectively.

Given the single open age category, many of the club's younger swimmers found it tough to get into the finals, but they showed huge potential for the future and were some of the fastest when results were split by age group.

Continuing on from her summer regional successes, Ella Greatbatch was the second fastest 13-year-old in the 100m breaststroke and third fastest in the 200m breaststroke.

BSSC East Region qualifiers: Ella Greatbatch (13yrs); Alice Longman, Kirsty Neill (14yrs); Callum Cox, David Badcock, Emma Fields, Grace Mason, Jago Derrington, Jessica Fields, Lauren Gore, Lilian Opiyo, Miriam Moukdad (15yrs); Freya Reilly, Sami Zemzami (16yrs); Millie Fields (17yrs); Alexander Catton, Eleanor Mason (18yrs); Niamh James (20yrs); Callum Davis (21yrs).
