Emily Wood goal earns Bishop’s Stortford V 1-0 win at Hertford II in East Women’s Hockey League




Emily Wood got the only goal of the game as Bishop’s Stortford V triumphed 1-0 at Hertford II in East Women’s Hockey League, Division 3SW on Saturday (March 1).

She made the breakthrough in the 32nd minute by deflecting the ball in at the back post after a shot had been saved.

Sarah Alderson had a goal disallowed while shot-stopper Sarah Bucknall was named player of the match for making some excellent saves.

In the same division, Lois Wright netted as the fourth team drew 1-1 at home to Letchworth II.

The first team lost more ground in the Premier Division title race as they let a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 home draw with Cambridge City III.

Daisy Fox put them ahead with a well-placed shot at the back post after 13 minutes and Lou Davies quickly doubled the lead with a phenomenal deflection from a short corner.

But the visitors levelled matters after the interval and the hosts needed goalkeeper Ibby Welldon to make some fine stops to preserve a point.

The result leaves second-placed Stortford three points adrift of leaders Harleston Magpies II with four games remaining.

Fiona Mulder scored a consolation as the second team lost 3-1 at Sudbury in 1S.

Grace Grindrod was named player of the match for the visitors, who lost Evie Chidgey to a head injury which required hospital treatment.

The sixth team produced a determined display when losing 10-1 at home to 3SE leaders Old Loughtonians III.

Charlie Woodrow got on the score sheet and the team were unfortunate not to convert more of their chances.

Vittoria and Vivienne Saunders were on target when the eighth team lost 3-2 at Hertford IV in 6SW while the 10th team (development) drew 0-0 with Potters Bar in 7SW as Vicky Thompson and Sienna-Rose Vermaak performed well.

In the East Men’s League, Jamie Brooks got two of the goals as the first team won 4-2 at Dereham in the Premier Division.

The second team suffered an agonising 4-3 home defeat to St Albans III in 2SW.

Tom Nash got a brace and Jeffrey Dummet also netted, but their opponents grabbed a last-minute winner from a penalty corner.

In the same division, the third team drew 3-3 at Letchworth II.

The fourth team lost 4-2 at home to St Albans V in 4SW, the fifth team triumphed 6-0 at Letchworth IV in 5SW, the sixth team were 2-1 winners at their Saffron Walden counterparts in 6SW and the seventh team (development) lost 4-3 at home to Hertford VII in 7SW.
