Sawbridgeworth's inconsistent start to their Saracens Hertfordshire League, Division One campaign continued as they were comprehensively beaten by seven wickets at St Margaretsbury on Saturday, writes Richard White.

Despite dropping to fifth in the table, George Kenny's side are still just 17 points off top spot after Redbourn and Leverstock Green both lost for the first time this season.

The visitors made a terrible start as they slumped to 12-3 inside six overs after being put in to bat.

Former Sawbo player Charlie Rudkin claimed the early wicket of Owen Groves, who nicked the second ball of the day straight to David Murphy at second slip. Murphy also snared Amit Gupta off the bowling of Mark Robinson, who also cleaned up Steve Ashman without scoring.

Rob Sanders joined Vibhor Yadav and the pair led the recovery with a fourth-wicket partnership of 92 before Murphy claimed his third catch of the innings off his own bowling to dismiss the former for 26.

Yadav powered on to his second century of the season, reaching 118 from 117 balls – 13 fours and four sixes – before being snapped up by Tyler van Rensburg off the bowling of John Thorley, who was also playing against his former club.

Matt Billings (40) and Kenny (23) added 49 for the eighth wicket before both were dismissed by the returning Robinson (4-49) as they helped the visitors reach 240-9 from their 50 overs.

In reply, the Bury shrugged off the early loss of Aiden Read as they cruised home with five overs to spare. James Barbett, who was dropped behind on 62, scored 104 as he featured in a second-wicket partnership of 172 with Murphy finishing unbeaten on 92 as the hosts reached 242-3 to move four points ahead of Sawbo in the table.

In Division 5B, William Jones scored 91 not out off 72 balls as Sawbo II needed just 26.1 overs to overhaul Boxmoor's total of 180.

James Frans (10-4-16-3) and Nick Dale (3-43) took three wickets apiece with the others being shared by Andrew Dongworth (10-2-28-2), Alfie Burrell and Sean Black.

Sawbo III inflicted a first defeat of the season on Cloghams, who were bowled out for 158 as they fell 21 runs short of Sawbo's total of 179-5 in a closely-fought Tees Herts & Essex League, Division Two clash.

Ian Bowler continued his fine form with an important innings of 38 and skipper Phil Hyam contributed 29 not out.

Charlie Newman impressed with the ball, taking 2-32 in eight overs, while Zoe Bovaird wrapped up the victory by taking her first wicket in senior league cricket.
