Full steam ahead for summer of fun as Audley End Miniature Railway marks its 60th anniversary
A brand new train to take Audley End Miniature Railway into the future launches on Saturday (July 20) as the attraction’s summer season gets under way for its 60th anniversary.
It is the first new-build commercial electric locomotive in 40 years to depart from the Audley End estate station and the only one in the country that has been built for a narrow-gauge line. It has been built bespoke to the owner’s design by The Steam Workshop.
Amanda Murray, who runs Audley End Miniature Railway, said: “Our 60th anniversary is the perfect time to launch our new electric train. As we celebrate this enormous milestone, the railway will connect our heritage with the future of our attraction. This summer we have so much in store for our visitors.”
Saturday’s launch will also see the arrival of brand new Railway Racer go-karts for children aged 3-8, who will be able to zoom around a purpose-built woodland race track.
Every summer the train departs from the miniature railway station to take visitors on a magical tour through its woodland trail with lots to spot along the journey.
Stopping off at the woodland station, visitors can hop off to wander through Fulfen Forest to the craft lodge, where children can decorate their own unicorn or dragon mask.
This year, Thorn, protector of the forest, invites passengers to a stage show to meet Nibbles the dragon. There will also be old-fashioned games on the field to enjoy and family favourite, Bubble and Boogie Time.
The magical fairy and elf walk will be open, where youngsters can try to spot the tiny creatures hidden among the trees. And discover the world of creepy crawlies and nature in the sensory Nature Corner.
Visitors can finish off their fun-filled day by letting off steam at the adventure playground and enjoy seasonal treats from the Woodland Café.
