Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia continues 10th anniversary season with ‘Momentum – An Evening of Music in Motion’

Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia’s 10th anniversary season continues with a concert entitled “Momentum”.

The evening at the Methodist Church on Saturday November 22 comprises a dynamic programme celebrating movement, energy and the expressive power of orchestral sound.

It opens with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Petite Suite de Concert, a work full of charm, elegance and rhythmic vitality that immediately draws the listener into its vibrant world.

The spotlight then turns to Edward Gregson’s Tuba Concerto, featuring the Sinfonia’s own Wilfred Driscoll as soloist.

Gregson’s concerto is lyrical and exuberant, offering a rare moment for the tuba to shine with virtuosic flair and good humour.

The performance continues the Sinfonia’s Spotlight series, an ongoing feature of recent seasons that celebrates the often-unsung instruments of the orchestra.

The concert culminates in Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F major, one of his most radiant and emotionally rich works, balancing sweeping passion with moments of tender lyricism.

Under the baton of principal conductor Rebecca Miller, the Sinfonia brings together music of drive, elegance and depth – an evening that captures the very essence of orchestral momentum.

Tanya Barringer, artistic director and leader of the Sinfonia, said: “Momentum captures everything we love about orchestral music – drive, expression and that sense of shared energy between players and audience.

“With Coleridge-Taylor’s irresistible charm, Gregson’s vibrant concerto and Brahms’ radiant Third Symphony, it promises to be an evening full of life and colour.”

The concert starts at 7pm. Tickets are priced at £18 for adults, £5 for students, free for under-18s, available on the door or in advance from www.bishopsstortfordsinfonia.com. Early bird booking discounts available.

Founded in 2015, the Sinfonia gives Bishop’s Stortford something few towns can boast: orchestral concerts of a truly professional standard.

Initially drawing on the wealth of local professional and semi-pro talent, the orchestra’s reputation has grown, and musicians now travel from across the UK to perform with it.

United by a shared passion for exceptional music-making, the Sinfonia’s players bring vitality, artistry and joy to audiences across the region.

On Remembrance Sunday (November 9) at 4pm, the Sinfonia will be hosting its monthly Listening Café at the Methodist Church, a relaxed and social way to explore music with members of the orchestra.

Held on the second Sunday afternoon of each month, each hour-long session features a Sinfonia musician sharing and discussing favourite recordings over tea and cake.

These informal afternoons are open to everyone — a chance to discover new sounds, ideas and friendships in a welcoming setting.
