Bulldog Freddie's meals are anything but a dog's dinner

Three siblings, who were once fussy eaters, have uncovered their talent for creative cooking, thanks to their three-year-old French bulldog, Freddie.

Driven by this newfound passion for culinary exploration, 10-year-old twins Ollie and Leo Kiernan and their little sister, Kitty, 7, have set up their own YouTube channel, Freddie’s Kitchen, where they show other children how simple it is to prepare their own food.

“The recipes are all really easy to follow so children can enjoy making them with little or no help,” said their mum, Lynsey.

She explained that during the day, when the kids are at St Mary’s CE Foundation Primary School in Stansted, Freddie writes the recipes in his notebook (with a little help from an adult, of course) for the children to try once they get home.

Once reluctant to try unfamiliar things, now whenever Freddie suggests a novel dish to try, Ollie, Leo and Kitty jump at the opportunity.

Earlier this year, the boys were diagnosed with dyslexia. “Although it came as a relief to them to finally understand why they struggled so much with school work, they’ve found the help and support they need isn’t available,” said their mother.

But the twins have found that cooking has helped them overcome this obstacle. “Cooking has helped with their co-ordination and given them confidence in themselves,” said Lynsey.

To make sure they get the freshest produce for their cuisine, the children get their ingredients in Bishop’s Stortford on market days, and they source their meat from Humphrey’s Butchers in Market Square.

When asked their favourite meal to cook, the children were unanimous – pizza burgers, which combines the best bits of two of their favourite snacks.

For Christmas 2016, the children were given their first cookbooks from Freddie, with simple recipes, clearly laid out, with lots of photos, along with Freddie’s Kitchen hoodies, and since then the budding chefs have blossomed.

Since they launched their YouTube page in November, each video has received dozens of likes, and views from all over the world.

Each member of the Freddie’s Kitchen team has their own role to play. Ollie is head of advertising, Leo is head of merchandise and Kitty is head of product development.

Freddie is head chef and always supervises the children when they prepare their food, “Freddie always came and looked when we were cooking,” Ollie said.

The family’s two other pets, English bulldogs Ruby, 6, and Roxie, 8, are always happy to help taste test the children’s creations.
