Julia Bullock, Matilda Lloyd and Paul Lewis among performers at Saffron Hall in January 2025




A star soprano for our times is bringing her charismatic stage presence to Saffron Hall in the new year.

Natural storyteller Julia Bullock will be performing with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Saffron Walden venue on Saturday January 11 (7.30pm).

She will use her vocal agility to sing a selection of some of the greatest baroque songs and arias, including impassioned laments from Purcell and Strozzi.

They are intertwined with orchestral interludes, including the justly-famous Spring from The Four Seasons.

Before that, on Sunday January 5 (4pm), the beginning of 2025 will be marked with A New Year’s Celebration featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra and trumpet virtuoso Matilda Lloyd.

Delight in the haunting beauty of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, renowned for its dramatic intensity and exquisite melodies.

Experience the sublime artistry of trumpet player Lloyd as she dazzles with Haydn’s captivating Trumpet Concerto, showcasing her unparalleled skill and virtuosity.

The programme also features other Viennese treasures by Strauss and Grace Williams’ delightful Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes, as well as a selection of opera arias arranged for trumpet and orchestra.

The Dan Forshaw Quartet return for a Foyer Jazz show on Friday January 10 (8pm).

Multi-award-winning saxophonist Forshaw studied in both London and New York and is often found playing with his eclectic projects across the UK in jazz clubs, theatres and cathedrals.

Paul Lewis will conclude his Schubert Piano Sonata Series at Saffron Hall on Sunday January 12 (3.30pm).

This is music to get lost in, to fall under the spell of its cumulative expressive power and then perhaps return again to the beginning.

Music fans can also enjoy a Foyer Folk show featuring Honey and the Bear on Friday January 17 (8pm) featuring cabaret table seating, a lively bar and a food truck.
