Saffron Walden Children's Orchestra get ready for summer sessions
Budding young musicians will be able to experience performing within an orchestra during a four-day training course this summer.
The Saffron Walden Children’s Orchestra (SWCO) is a programme run by members of the Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra, who put on the music courses during the Easter and summer holidays.
All young orchestral instrumentalists aged seven and over and who are playing to a standard of grades 1 to 5 can join the orchestra and learn how to play a wide range of different instruments.
Mrs Tealby-Watson, a SWCO parent, said: “The Saffron Walden Children’s Orchestra is a lovely way for my child to get to know other children who share the same interest in music.
“It’s a friendly atmosphere and gives them all a chance to play music in a group, instead of just the usual practise alone.”
The courses help children develop as musicians while they learn to play with others as part of a large ensemble. The music selected by the symphony orchestra team often includes some classical pieces as well as a lighter repertoire, for example scores from Disney films.
The children work together with their section coaches and then on the final day of the course, they join together to perform as an orchestra, usually in Saffron Hall.
During the courses, children are given the opportunity to experience other activities such as African drumming, choirs and beat-boxing to broaden their understanding of music.
Ten year-old Rhona attended the last summer course and said: “It’s nice to play with people of different ages. I liked the drumming workshop.”
The next course is being held from Tuesday, July 30 until Friday, August 2. Each day will run from 9.30am until 3.30pm and lessons will take place at the Saffron Walden County High School.
The course costs £120 per child. Sibling discounts are available and there will be financial assistance for those receiving free school meals.
