Watch Herts & Soul Community Choir perform a mix of traditional songs and carols with seasonal pop, rock and folk in Virtual Christmas Concert

Get into the festive spirit and raise money for Isabel Hospice by settling down to watch Herts & Soul Community Choir’s Virtual Christmas Concert.

The Bishop’s Stortford-based musical group has had to adapt since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and has held more than 30 ‘virchearsals’ – virtual rehearsals – to enable members to continue singing in its 10th-anniversary year.

The virtual gig is being released on the choir’s website and YouTube channel this Sunday (December 20) from 6pm for people to enjoy a mix of traditional songs and carols with seasonal pop, rock and folk.

Herts & Soul had four concerts scheduled for this year, together with appearances at the Bish Bash Stortford Music Festival, the Remembrance Sunday service, Isabel Hospice’s Lights of Love service and the UK Choir Festival.

Covid-19 put paid to all that, but, true to their ‘Soulster’ values, and with the determination and ingenuity of those who run it to keep the singing going, the spirit of the choir community has been kept intact every Friday night since March with online sessions.

“We’re really excited by the idea of the Christmas concert going online,” said founder Chris Humphreys.

“There has been no pressure on our Soul Brothers and Sisters to record and submit a video of themselves singing, but most of them have mastered the technology to do so.

“Many have just sung along for the sheer joy of it – the sense of pleasure and wellbeing is evident and much more important than the end result, although we already know it’s going to be a winner!

“Not only that, we’re also delighted that we’re still able to support Isabel Hospice – it’s the icing on our Christmas choral cake.”

Over the past decade, the choir has raised more than £55,000 for local causes. Had its 10th Anniversary Gala Concert, scheduled to take place at South Mill Arts, gone ahead, Isabel Hospice would have reaped the benefits of the proceeds.

Now people are invited to watch the free Christmas concert on demand with a gentle steer to donate to the hospice via the choir’s dedicated JustGiving site.
