David James reviews Christmas pantomime Robin Hood at South Mill Arts in Bishop’s Stortford

The Indie’s David James reviews South Mill Arts’ Christmas pantomime, Robin Hood

I met with my family in the bar of South Mill Arts, with us all in the same place for the first time since the morning. A theatre trip to London and a reunion party had seen the four of us spread out for the day. The stress of family travel logistics soon melted away as we took our seats for another classic panto story: Robin Hood.

This was the third panto in a row that we’ve been to and all three have impressed. Taking a teen and a pre-teen anywhere has its challenges, but the whole cast had them (and us adults) toe-tapping and clapping to the beats.

At the heart of the show is Daniel Slade’s dashing Robin Hood, whose charm and bravery are perfectly complemented by Etta Williams’ Maid Marian, a character imbued with wit and strength. Their onstage partnership breathes life into the classic love story at the centre of the tale.

Nathan French shines as the hilarious and menacing Sheriff of Nottingham, a villain whose over-the-top antics and sharp comic timing made him a crowd favourite. His exchanges with the flamboyant Dame Mother Hood, a beloved pantomime staple played to a tee by Tommy Pegg, bring additional humour and sparkle to the show.

Megan Crawford as Little Joan and Matt Slade as Will Scarlet provide the comic rounding that helps keep the plot moving and the jokes flowing.

Ian McFarlane’s direction is filled with thoughtful touches that make this production stand out. From elaborate costumes that glitter under the lights to energetic musical numbers, the attention to detail is again remarkable. You couldn’t expect anything more from a West End production.

The talented ensemble, which features young performers from the local community, adds to the magic. Their lively presence not only enhances the show but also reflects South Mill Arts’ commitment to nurturing local talent. These young performers bring energy and enthusiasm to the production, enriching the experience.

One of the highlights of Robin Hood is its vibrant atmosphere, created through clever staging and interactive moments. The audience can expect to be drawn into the story with plenty of opportunities to cheer for the heroes, boo the villains and participate in the fun. There’s never a dull moment, whether singing along to catchy tunes or joining in the famous panto call-and-response.

The warmth and humour of the script, coupled with outstanding performances and dazzling visuals, make this a must-see show of the season.

The South Mill Arts production of Robin Hood is a joyful and dazzling pantomime that combines humour, heart and holiday magic. Another year and another panto winner delivered by McFarlane and his band of merry men and women!
