Bishop's Stortford Musical Theatre Company Juniors look to make a splash with Little Mermaid
A new musical theatre group for children in Bishop's Stortford is starting classes – and trawling for a cast for its debut show this summer.
Bishop’s Stortford Musical Theatre Company (BSMTC) Juniors – for youngsters aged 7 to 14, and a sister group to BSMTC Youth – launches this month and will be dipping its toe in the production waters at Rhodes Arts Complex in July with Disney's The Little Mermaid.
The musical, based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale and Disney's Oscar-winning 1989 film animation, tells the story of mermaid princess Ariel, who dreams of the world above the sea and gives up her voice to find love.
The BSMTC Juniors creative team behind the show are looking for a talented cast to play the parts such as Ariel, her love interest Prince Eric, evil sea witch Ursula, Ariel's father King Triton and her companions Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle.
The stage show, which took Broadway by storm, has been especially adapted for a younger cast. It includes the hit songs Under The Sea, Kiss The Girl and the iconic Part of Your World.
Weekly classes in musical theatre, acting, singing, dancing and improvisation will be held every Sunday, leading to a West End-quality show in the summer.
A free taster day for the classes will take place at The Bishop’s Stortford High School this Sunday (Jan 13) from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It will start with a fun warm-up and be followed by a chance for children to experience being taught song, dance and acting out characterisation from The Little Mermaid.
Matthew Nash, membership and production co-ordinator for BSMTC Juniors, said: “We're so excited to launch BSMTC Juniors, the sister group to BSMTC Youth, who have already delivered successful shows such as Legally Blonde and will be performing Hairspray this March.
"We feel that the age group 7-14 have long been looking for a theatre group to perform in shows of this standard. Broadway shows are few and far between in Stortford so we want to give children this amazing opportunity.”
Mark Fitzgerald, production manager for BSMTC Juniors, said: “Disney’s The Little Mermaid is an amazing show to start our BSMTC Juniors journey with. I’m looking forward to seeing the company members gain new skills and gain confidence with our great creative team.
"My biggest challenge will be turning Rhodes' stage into the underwater world and adding the Disney magic to the look and feel of the production from a technical side. I can’t wait to create a new theatre family and have amazing memories with the team.”
Cat Quigley, a director for BSMTC Juniors, said: “We can’t wait to cast local children who can let their imaginations run wild and, most importantly, have the time of their lives as they perform in such an enchanting tale.
"Parents won’t be able to help themselves singing along to this show and we can’t wait for them to see what we've created for this show visually and sound-wise. There are so many fantastic parts up for grabs where every child will get the chance to perform.”
Choreographer Chloe-Lee Frazer said: “Whether your child is a beginner in dance or very advanced, we'll make sure they have the right tuition and role so they can showcase their skills and feel very welcome.”
