Philosophical 'geezer' Jeff Innocent headlines Stortford comedy club

A comic with"the body of a nightclub bouncer and the brains of a university boffinis the headliner at this Saturday's monthly stand-up show in Bishop's Stortford.

Jeff Innocent won Best Live Club Comedian 2016 at the UK Comedy Awards, having been runner-up each of the three previous years. He also took the Best In Fest title at the Norwich Comedy Festival 2014 and was nominated in the 2015 Chortle Awards Best Live Club Act category.

His appeal lies in the contrast between his East End ‘geezer’ appearance and demeanour, and his educated, philosophical delivery and subject matter.

This inspired The Guardian to dub him the comedian with “the body of a nightclub bouncer and the brains of a university boffin”.

The support at the monthly Laughing Bishops club in the United Reformed Church hall in Water Lane is a familiar voice. Stefano Paolini has been a special guest on BBC Radio 4’s Dead Ringers and Loose Ends shows, and voiced a variety of characters. On TV, he was the voice of Tony Blair in Channel 4’s Double Take and Fabio Capello in ITV1’s Headcases.

Also appearing is highly original and quirky performer Roger Monkhouse.

His trademark, stage-prowling style and curious, inimitable manner have established him as one of the hottest names on the comedy circuit.

With audience banter down to an art form, Roger is happy to improvise freely but has no shortage of first-class material in his armoury.

As ever, the MC will be hosted by Stortford resident Paddy Lennox. The Irishman is a regular at the Comedy Store London, Manchester and Dubai. He first burst onto the stage as a stand-up in 2001, only to be interrupted by a couple of comedies at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre and filming in far-off lands before returning to his new-found passion.

He has supported touring comics such as Micky Flanagan, Rhod Gilbert and Lucy Porter.

Whilst playing all the usual big clubs, Paddy likes to gig the smaller ones too. “Otherwise life gets too predictable,” he said.

There is a cash bar with real ale, and the event is for over-18s only.
