Pianist Victor Maslov performing concert in Stansted on Sunday January 26

An internationally-renowned young pianist is lined up to deliver a fascinating afternoon of richly romantic Russian and Ukrainian music in Stansted later this month, writes Richard Allaway.

Victor Maslov, himself Russian-born, will perform at St John’s Church on Sunday January 26 (3pm) as part of music@stansted’s current season of live concerts.

It is a great opportunity for one and all to hear a breathtaking young musician playing live on our doorstep.

Maslov has been praised as “one of those people who is close to all-round mastery of his repertoire” by the New York Concert Review.

Two great Russian composers – Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky – will feature alongside a less well-known contemporary Ukrainian composer, Valentyn Silvestrov.

Pieces by the Ukrainian, now resident in Berlin, will follow the first set of Etudes-Tableaux by Rachmaninoff, while the second half of the concert will consist of one giant work: Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

Beginning his studies in Moscow, Maslov graduated from London’s Royal College of Music in 2021, receiving the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Rose Bowl for his achievements there. He has amassed armfuls of international prizes and awards in the years since.

Admission on the door will be £15 for adults, £12 for over-65s and free of charge for under-21s. St John’s offers ample seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

Maslov’s appearance in Stansted is funded by the generosity of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust Recital Scheme.
