Comedian Geoff Norcott to preview Edinburgh Fringe show at Stortford’s The Laughing Bishops Comedy Club
Comedy fans are in for another Edinburgh Fringe preview treat as Geoff Norcott brings his Basic Bloke stand-up show to Bishop’s Stortford.
The comic, billed as a “rare right-winger” and “unique British comedy talent”, will appear at The Laughing Bishops Comedy Club this Sunday (Aug 18).
A sneak peek of his Basic Bloke fringe show will see him trying to make sense of politics, culture and masculinity with his provocative brand of humour.
His mission this time, as well as casting his everyman eye over what's happening in wider society, is to unpick what's happening with your average bloke.
The 47-year-old trained as a teacher after a spell in advertising on graduating from London’s Goldsmith’s College and for a while juggled working in the classroom with performing stand-up.
His first gig was at Jongleurs comedy club chain in 2007 and he has since made TV appearances on Mock The Week, Live At The Apollo and BBC Question Time.
His true breakthrough into the mainstream came when he declared himself pro-Brexit and a Conservative voter and much play has been made of him being the only Conservative comedian.
An article in Conservative Home states that claim is a good way of puncturing what he calls “the towering moral pomposity” of some members of the Left. But at the same time he is not afraid to attack the party he grew up to support, once describing the post-Brexit Tory cabinet as like a bunch of Bond villains.
It’s the second Edinburgh Fringe preview night at The Laughing Bishops – with left wing firebrand Mark Thomas and Colin Hoult wowing an audience at the Water Lane United Reformed Church Hall venue back in June.
