Singalong Wicked, Mr Burton and The Last Showgirl at South Mill Arts in Bishop’s Stortford
Join in with a host of iconic tunes when South Mill Arts hosts two special Singing Cinema screenings of Wicked (PG).
The Bishop’s Stortford venue is showing the smash-hit movie at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday May 17 with audience members encouraged to sing along to the likes of Popular and Defying Gravity.
And fancy dress costumes are more than welcome, whether you are in Team Pink or Team Green.
The film, which stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. Elphaba is a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power while Glinda is a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition.
Following an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their conflicting desires have unexpected and shocking consequences and ultimately sees them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Mr Burton (12A), which is being shown on Monday May 19 at 2pm and Tuesday May 20 at 7pm, is based on the remarkable true story of a poor miner’s son who became one of the greatest actors the world has ever known with the help of an unlikely mentor.
In the Welsh town of Port Talbot in 1942, Richard Jenkins (Harry Lawtey) lives as a wayward schoolboy, caught between the pressures of his struggling family, a devastating war and his own ambitions.
However, a new opportunity arises when Richard’s natural talent for drama catches the attention of his teacher, Philip Burton (BAFTA winner Toby Jones).
The young man thrives thanks to Philip’s strict tutelage and the guidance of kindly landlady Ma Smith (Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville). But, as the acting world comes within Richard’s reach, the burden of his past risks holding him back forever.
Pamela Anderson stars as the glamorous Shelly in The Last Showgirl (15), also on Monday May 19 (7pm) and Tuesday May 20 (2pm).
When the glittering Las Vegas revue she has headlined for decades announces it will soon close, Shelly must reconcile with the decisions she’s made and the life she has built as she plans her next act whilst also striving to repair the relationship with her daughter (Billie Lourd).
With an ensemble cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song and Kiernan Shipka, the movie is a tribute to a long-gone Las Vegas and all the women who made it glitter.
