The concert will begin with Prokofiev’s March from The Love for Three Oranges, a short yet brilliantly energetic piece from his comic opera.

The piece is famous for its catchy, exuberant theme and has become one of Prokofiev’s most beloved works with whimsical character and playful orchestration.

Soloist Alex Redington, a founding member of the critically acclaimed Doric String Quartet, will join the orchestra to close the first half with Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

The concerto, written during a period of intense political pressure in Stalinist Russia, is one of the composer’s most profound and emotionally complex works.

The concert will conclude with Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3, a powerful and deeply emotional work composed during his later years in exile.

It is filled with sweeping melodies, nostalgic longing and vibrant orchestration, blending Rachmaninov’s lush romanticism with his more modern, harmonic language.

The December 1 concert starts at 3pm. Tickets, priced £21/£18 for adults, £11 for 18- to 25-year-olds and £6 for under-18s, can be bought online at www.saffronhall.com, by calling 0845 548 7650 or from Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre.
