Bishop's Stortford Art Society member Peter Blascos has met Sting and Lars Tharp through his love of painting

Bishop's Stortford Art Society member Peter Blascos shares some of his favourite pictures with Indie readers...

I have always loved sketching, and when, with my wife Margaret's encouragement, sketching progressed into painting, it made such a difference to my retirement.

We have painted in wonderful places abroad and in the UK, learning from tutors like John Yardley and Alwyn Crawshaw, making many friends over the years.

Most of my watercolours are done on the spot, often in towns or harbours.

We have met some fascinating people through painting, such as Sting and his wife on the Greek island of Symi and Lars Tharp in Suffolk. We were even pointed out as Mr and Mrs Picasso by a tour guide while painting at the Alhambra. You never know who may be looking over your shoulder.

One thing has changed, though: I take a comfortable chair with me, having just reached my 90th birthday I am proud to say.

Artists demonstrating their work at Bishop's Stortford Art Society have been a great inspiration.

During my 50-year membership I have been the publicity officer, helped to organise our annual exhibitions, designed and made the display screens we use.

All the painting activities have been very enjoyable, and it is most satisfying when someone likes your work enough to buy it.
